Freemasonry, or Masonry, is the oldest and largest fraternal organization in the world. Its basic tenets stress the importance of self-improvement, service to community, loyalty to one’s country, and it encourages its members to practice their personal faith. In general, Freemasons believe in the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God. Although Masonry does not require a candidate to believe in any particular religion – it accepts those who believe in all faiths, it does require that he have a belief in God, karma, or higher purpose. Atheists cannot become Freemasons.
At its core, Masonry strives to “make good Men better”. It uses the tools and implements of ancient architectural craftsmen symbolically in a system of instruction that is designed to build character and instill moral values in its members. Masonry teaches that each person, through self-improvement and helping others, has an obligation – and the capability – to make a difference in this world, to be an agent of Good. Its bonds of friendship, compassion, and brotherhood have survived in the most divisive political, military, and religious conflicts through the centuries.
